FROM ARTILLERY TO DRONES
Since their introduction to the battlefield 10 years ago, drones have become the number one killer of soldiers in combat - accounting for 80% of casualties in Ukraine.
This represents the biggest tactical shift since the invention of artillery.
QUADCOPTERS: THE FIRST REVOLUTION
Cheap DJI and Autel commercial quadcopters, jury-rigged with explosives, have become a dominant attrition weapon in trench warfare. With the capability of neutralizing multi-million-dollar assets, they have created an extreme battlefield cost assymetry. Their deployment has also enabled a strategic ‘push-back’ of frontline human presence: operators and combat units can now launch attacks from safer, rearward positions a few kilometers from the front line.
FIXED WING DRONES ARE THE NEXT STEP
Low-cost fixed-wing drones push the front line back hundreds of kilometers. With longer endurance and greater payloads, they enable deep strikes, electronic warfare, and reconnaissance far beyond the trenches. A $10–15K system can cripple assets worth tens of millions, and scaled production unlocks mothership concepts and swarming tactics. China is already there: CETC fielded a 200-fixed-wing swarm in 2017, and the Jiu Tian mothership can deploy hundreds in flight. NATO, by contrast, has no equivalent, leaving a dangerous capability gap in the age of mass attritable warfare.
